This course acknowledges the many dimensions of diversity, including intersectionality. Systemic racism shapes human experieinces, including oppression, poverty, marginalization, and alienation. Through this course, students understand the societal and historical roots of social and racial injustices and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination at the individual, family, group, organizational, and community levels. Students gain knowledge on how social workers work across the globe to eliminate oppressive structural barriers to advance human rights, reduce inequities, and ensure dignity and respect for all. Students embrace inclusion and cultural humility to manage the influences of bias, privilege, and power.
