Rec-Fitness Center accident causes five injuries

At approximately 6:40 p.m. in the Goshen College Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center’s Gunden Gymnasium, part of a suspended batting cage fell onto the floor and bleachers below, where a summer high school volleyball league match was about to start.

Four parents of Northridge High School players, as well as a Goshen College student who was assisting with the match, were struck by the cage. Goshen paramedics quickly arrived and treated those injured. All are having their injuries evaluated and treated this evening at IU Health Goshen Hospital; none of the injuries appear to be life threatening. The gymnasium was immediately evacuated and no high school players were injured.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with each of the persons injured by this accident and their families,” said Bill Born, vice president of student life.

Goshen College officials and outside experts will be investigating the cause of the accident in the coming days.
