THIS WEEK’S THEME: Prepare

DEVOTIONAL:
I am a person that likes to prepare. I like to plan and prepare for my day, week and sometimes month ahead of time. With school, this is very easy to do as all I need is my planner. I carry my planner almost everywhere and color-code my schedule. I’m known among my friends as a planner, who likes to have everything in order and prepared, so there are no surprises.

DEVOTIONAL:
The sun burst forth again this morning!

It began with a glimmer of light. Then came the brightening of the sky and a coloring of the eastern clouds – followed by the dramatic rising of the familiar orb. Signs of its presence were all around: reflections in ponds and wetlands, golden light on tree trunks, sparkles on the frost, and a deepening blue in the sky.

DEVOTIONAL:
Traveling is such a funny thing. Two summers ago I went to Senegal in West Africa for Goshen’s three-month Study-Service Term (SST). During my time there, I experienced an amazing transition from stranger to family member; from American to adopted Senegalese. What an incredible blessing it was! Despite language and cultural barriers galore, I formed deep connections to the people who welcomed me into their lives.

DEVOTIONAL:
Advent bursts in upon the autumnal rhythms of ordinary time. Fallen leaves, the last hurrah of overripe bounties, are rustled about by breezes and blowers. The nose of every sentient creature tingles with the scent of things to come. I invite you now to pause, and peer towards time’s first wrinkle.

DEVOTIONAL:
According to an ancient Jewish midrash, someone asked Rabbi Joshua, “Why did God speak to Moses from a bush?” Rabbi Joshua replied, “God spoke from a bush to teach that there is no place where the Divine is not present, not even in a lowly bush.”

WELCOME:
If you had a particular message to convey to someone, how would you go about doing that? If you wanted to tell a group of close friends some really exciting news, what would you do to fully express your passion? I remember well when Pamela and I became engaged. How would we let people know of the joy we wanted to share? To start with, we gave my parents a photo of the two of us as a way of sharing the good news with them. We called Pamela’s mother and a few other people, and then eventually resorted to a mass e-mail. But the moments leading up to our sharing the news or clicking “send” were ones of joyously anticipating their response. (more…)

As churches prepare to celebrate Christ’s birth, Goshen College offers an online spiritual resource to help believers make time and space in their hearts and minds to welcome Advent, even in the midst of busy schedules and hectic lives.

Beginning Nov. 23 (the Monday prior to the first Sunday in Advent) and culminating on Christmas Day, Goshen College students, faculty and staff will provide weekday reflections based on lectionary Scripture passages. Many writers will reflect on the Advent theme: “Bursting in and breaking out.” (Our Advent theme is based on the worship resources developed in Leader Magazine, a quarterly publication of Mennonite Publishing Network. For further information go to www.leaderonline.org.)

The devotions will reflect honestly on the Scriptures and offer words of assurances of faith. The spiritual offerings will include poetry, personal stories, reflections and prayers, all intended to more closely examine the call to change and follow Christ.

Since 2001, Goshen College annually celebrates special seasons of the church calendar, particularly Advent and Lent, with online devotions.
