DEVOTIONAL:
Each Christmas season, the mystery and miracle of Incarnation sends a wave of awe over me. Our God is a God who comes to us. The Creator of the Universe stirs and moves among us creatures here on planet Earth. Jesus of Nazareth came and lived among us more than 2,000 years ago. No one knows when he will come again. But we do know that the Holy Spirit stirs and moves among us today. Advent reminds us that God continues to come. (more…)

DEVOTIONAL:
If you were told that someone was going to publish a book about your life, beginning from this moment on, is there anything you would change? At some point in the last few years I decided that I would live my life “like an open book.” I became convinced that if I was living for Christ, I should have nothing to hide. (more…)

DEVOTIONAL:
Although the group pilgrimage to the Jerusalem Temple setting for Psalm 122 may seem far removed from our situation in 2010, I believe that many aspects of this “Song of Ascents” continue to ring true for Christians in the third millennium. (more…)

DEVOTIONAL:
Heraclitus, the ancient Greek philosopher, declared, “All things come to pass and perish through strife.” Much later, Thomas Jefferson seemed to agree. “The tree of liberty,” he proclaimed, “must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” Are we destined to such self-fulfilling prophecies of warfare and violence? Is humanity simply bound by fate to be what Oliver Stone’s movie title suggests, Natural Born Killers?

WELCOME:
Welcome to Goshen College’s online devotionals for the 2010 Advent season! Our theme this year, taken from Mennonite Church USA worship resources, is “An Unexpected Hour.” Every Monday an author will introduce the sub-theme, whereas the following weekdays an author will reflect on a specific Scripture passage from the lectionary.

As churches prepare to celebrate Christ’s birth, Goshen College offers an online spiritual resource to help believers make time and space in their hearts and minds to welcome Advent, even in the midst of busy schedules and hectic lives.

Beginning Nov. 22 (the Monday prior to the first Sunday in Advent) and culminating on Christmas Day, Goshen College students, faculty and staff will provide weekday reflections based on lectionary Scripture passages. Many writers will reflect on the Advent theme: “An Unexpected Hour.” (Our Advent theme is based on the worship resources developed in Leader Magazine, a quarterly publication of Mennonite Publishing Network.)

The devotions will reflect honestly on the Scriptures and offer words of assurances of faith. The spiritual offerings will include poetry, personal stories, reflections and prayers, all intended to more closely examine the call to change and follow Christ.

Since 2001, Goshen College annually celebrates special seasons of the church calendar, particularly Advent and Lent, with online devotions.

DEVOTIONAL:
Our text for this Christmas Day transports us from the story of Jesus’ birth to one of our only accounts from Jesus’ childhood. As I read over this passage, I wondered what parenting Jesus was like. God bursts into Mary and Joseph’s lives with extraordinary power and mystery. What a strange task – raising the Son of God! (more…)

DEVOTIONAL:
Advent is a season of wonder, stillness, waiting and watching. Growing up with a pastor for a mother, I experienced richly the period of waiting and watching that is the Advent season. Every night we gathered in our living room. My brother and I ran around the house turning off the lights, and then we all gathered in front of the tree. My parents resolved whatever disputes there were about who got to light the Advent candles, then we sang. After we sang a few songs, it was time for my favorite part. (more…)

DEVOTIONAL:
During Advent, we typically focus closely on the coming of God’s gift, his son Jesus. We praise him for that and show our gratitude in different ways. God has given us more than his Son, but he has blessed us with such a beautiful earth to live on. God burst in and created the heavens and the earth, and we give him our ultimate praise.

DEVOTIONAL:
In today’s Scripture we find Hannah, Samuel’s mother, bringing him a robe as she and her husband Elkanah made their way to the temple to make the annual sacrifice. When we meet Hannah in the story she is visiting her son whom she gave to the Lord for His work because it was God who had given Hannah her son. (more…)
