Welcome to the modern language department, where language is the way and the wave of the future!

We are a small but energetic department of four languages (German, French, Spanish and ASL) that knows the world of today and tomorrow clearly belongs to those who learn another language and experience the culture of its speakers (past and present) firsthand. Our goal is to prepare multilingual and articulate leaders for the global community of the 21st century.

Study abroad

Since many students return from SST (Study-Service Term) inspired to continue studying and practicing their respective languages, they also participate in exciting programs abroad through Brethren Colleges Abroad (BCA). Native speakers of French, German and Spanish, often on exchange through BCA, regularly assist in the departmental courses. Courses include not only language at all levels, but also interdisciplinary courses in translation such as Creative Mythology, Literature and Music in 19th Century Germany, and Francophone Literature.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a popular major and minor. Our program is one of only 30 in the United States. GC modern language graduates are found in education, library sciences, international business, marketing and sales, hotel/restaurant management, mission work, medical professions, law, human relations and the arts. Visit the TESOL program page.

Outcomes

MCLL graduates (majors, double majors and minors) go on to successful careers in fields such: teaching (middle school, high school and college levels), library sciences, marketing and sales, administration (in fields like education or hotel/restaurant management), mission work, medical professions, law, human resources, public relations, financial services, and music. German, Spanish and French students have also won prestigious Pew and Fulbright scholarships for advanced study in various disciplines in the US and abroad.
