Rousseau’s piece, “Aspects of the Feminine”
The Hershberger Art Gallery in the Goshen College Music Center will present its latest exhibit, Aspects of the Feminine by Laurie Rousseau, at an opening reception on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. The exhibit will run through March 16.
Rousseu’s artist statement for the exhibit is as follows: My work explores ancient Goddess figurines, some of the oldest art that exists. I have used images of the Goddess and her artifacts as a point of departure because I am inspired by these symbols of female power. My imagery seeks to express the hidden potential of the feminine for transformation and celebrate the female form as a creator of life and a connection to the earth. My most recent artworks are an exploration of the energy of feminine spirit and its potential for healing, hope and change.
Rousseau was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, received her B.F.A. at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan and her M.F.A. in drawing at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. She has been an art educator for over 30 years. She currently teaches art to children at Good Shepherd Montessori School and creates her work at Taylor Street Art Studio in South Bend, Indiana. Her focus is on figurative and botanical artwork using the mediums of drawing, painting, collage, photocopies and printmaking. She is interested in the climate crisis, environmental toxins, and the connections between all things.
