Math Competition Results

Avery Schiller obtained a score of 14 on the 85th William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition run on December 7, 2024–it took a while to score the proofs written during the six-hour competition by the 3,988 student competitors. It is possible to obtain up to 120 points, but The highest score this year was 90, the average score was approximately 8, and the median score was 2 (you read that correctly: over half of the participants earned 2 or less points). Avery’s 14 has only been surpassed by Matthew Rissler’s 30 in 2002 and Andy Clemens’ 20 in 2012, and it tied Peter Schrock’s 14 in 2014.
Schools can designate up to three students whose scores are summed to create a “team” score for the school. Since no other Goshen College student competed this time, Avery’s score alone put Goshen College 188th out of the 477 institutions who participated in the competition!
