Employment – Vice President for Finance

Position Summary:
The Vice President for Finance serves as the Chief Financial Officer for the college, is a member of the President’s Cabinet and actively engages with diverse constituents of the College, both internal and external, on fiscal and strategic matters. The Vice President closely collaborates with the President and other Vice Presidents to set financial priorities, facilitate strategic plans including the campus master plan, manage the budget, and report financial data to appropriate audiences. The VPF is responsible for leading the area of Accounting and works closely with other Vice Presidents and Human Resources to establish compensation and benefits policies and to implement those policies in support of an overall strategy for employee recruitment, retention and satisfaction. The Vice President for Finance embraces and strives to provide an excellent student learning environment aligned with Goshen’s vision, mission, Christ-centered core values. This Vice President staffs the Asset Stewardship Committee of the Board of Directors, represents the college on the Board of Directors for the Mennonite Education Benefits Plan, and represents the College on matters of endowment and trust management.
Essential Functions
Finance and Budget (60%)
- Functions as the chief fiscal officer for the institution.
- Participates in institutional strategic and long-range planning processes, and leads implementation of financial elements of strategic direction.
- Works with all of the vice presidents to continually improve planning and engagement processes for budgeting and financial forecasting. Leads process to prepare annual operating and capital budgets for approval by the Board of Directors.
- Represents the institution in business transactions involving banks, lawyers, accountants, architects, construction managers and other external professionals.
- Oversees accounting and financial reporting through the Controller and provides counsel and assistance as needed. Prepares regular, thorough financial reports for the President’s Cabinet, the Board of Directors, and other GC stakeholders.
- Responsible for overall cash management for the college, including investments outside of our endowments.
- Serves as institutional liaison to the entities who manage our endowments (Mennonite Education Agency Investment Committee; Reith Trust Advisory Committee; C. Henry Smith Trust Advisory Committee, Community Foundation of Elkhart County).
- Serves as Treasurer of the Corporation and as a staff person to the Asset Stewardship Committee of the Board.
- Works closely with Human Resources to develop and support the employee experience through financial planning, which involves policy development and implementation of employee compensation and benefits.
- Represents the College on various finance-related boards, including:
- C. Henry Smith Trust (joint with Bluffton University)
- Mennonite Educators Benefit Plan (MEBP)
- Lee and Mary Jane Rieth Trust Advisory Board (Merry Lea)
- Manages insurance programs for the institution.
- Serves as the institution’s risk management officer.
Net Revenue Growth and Forecasting (20%)
- Works collaboratively and proactively to allocate resources and create opportunities for revenue growth for the college, aligned with strategic planning.
- Supports the advancement work of the college by aligning fundraising (gifts and grants) with financial forecasting and resource allocation.
Leadership and Management (20%)
- Serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet.
- Supervises senior accounting staff and others as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree with academic preparation related to administration and finance or equivalent credentials and/or experience.
- Five plus years of financial leadership experience with specific expertise in budget management, insurance risk management and investments.
- Excellent interpersonal competence to build diverse and inclusive teams and support co-workers and associates.
- Exercise seasoned judgment and be able to make ethical decisions with proper consultation.
- Possess a strong sense of stewardship for resources entrusted to the college.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; Ability to communicate complex financial issues to general audiences.
- An appreciation of the Anabaptist Mennonite faith perspective and a commitment to Goshen College’s mission, vision, core values and community standards.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience in non-profit finance and accounting.
- Experience managing capital projects.
- Masters of Business Administration degree.
