Counselor/Counseling Intern

The Counselor/Counseling Intern plays a pivotal role in providing mental health support and holistic health promotion for members of the College community. Reporting to the Director of Health and Wellness and/or approved Field Instructor (MSW + 2 or more years’ direct experience in the field of social work), this position is integral to supporting student’s mental health needs to strengthen opportunities for student success. The ideal candidate will be a key player in assessing and improving mental health support for students and promoting positive mental health to the campus community overall.

Key Responsibilities:
● Providing 14+ hours of direct in-person counseling support for students in a clinical setting.

● Providing 1-2 hours of group-focused counseling support for students weekly or biweekly.

● Planning and providing positive mental health promotion through weekly or biweekly group activities and events for students (e.g., mindfulness maps, coping with college stressors, engaging in healthy habits)

● Conduct assessment and identify adjustments and growth areas for supporting mental health goals.

● Assist in establishing and evaluating specific outcomes, targets, or metrics for positive mental health support on campus.

● In collaboration with the Director of Health and Wellness, develop and implement strategies and processes for strengthening mental health support on campus.

● Provide insights and recommendations to the Director of Health and Wellness

● Produce a monthly newsletter to communicate mental health and basic-needs support to the college community.

● Meet for weekly or biweekly supervision with Field Instructor (determined by program).

Qualifications

Candidate Requirements:
● This position requires good standing in a graduate-level or master’s-level degree program.

● Strong skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, program assessment, and communication.

● Knowledge of Microsoft products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google products (e.g., Forms, Spreadsheets, Drive), and other web-based tools (e.g., Canva, Qualtrics).

● Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

● Understanding of the unique needs of diverse populations (e.g., BIPOC and international students, veterans, student athletes, pregnant and parenting students, commuter students).

● Commitment to serving and supporting all who seek assistance, as well as ensuring the equitable support of underserved populations, through a mindset of inclusive excellence.

● Knowledge of assessment methods and organizational skills are recommended.

● Experience in project development is beneficial.

● Understanding the management of community service organizations (e.g., food pantries, soup kitchens) is beneficial, but not required.

● Understanding of events management, program management, marketing and communications are beneficial, but not required.
