Digital Media Specialist

Position Summary:
The Digital Media Specialist plays a key role in elevating Goshen College’s digital presence to drive student enrollment, alumni/donor support and engagement with the college by creating engaging, on-brand social media and web content, and capturing compelling photography and videography that reflects the vibrancy of campus life. This position is ideal for a creative, detail-oriented professional who is passionate about visual storytelling and fostering meaningful connections with current and prospective students, alumni and the broader Goshen College community.
Essential Functions:
- Content Creation and Execution
- Develop, plan and schedule content for Goshen College’s primary social media channels.
- Develop and execute weekly and monthly content calendars aligned with institutional priorities, seasonal campaigns and audience interests.
- Create compelling captions, headlines and hashtags that reflect Goshen College’s tone and brand voice.
- Repurpose existing content (features, news articles, profiles, videos, etc.) into engaging social media formats.
- Ensure consistency across platforms in terms of brand messaging, imagery and visual identity.
- Photography and Visual Storytelling
- Capture high-quality, candid and posed photography for campus events, academic programs and student life.
- Direct campus photography, including taking photos, supervising student photographers, working with freelance photographers and coordinating photo shoots.
- Edit, crop and optimize photos for both print and digital use.
- Build and maintain a searchable photo archive for future marketing needs.
- Identify emerging visual stories on campus by building relationships with students, faculty and staff.
- Organize, tag and archive photos for easy access and future use.
- Video and Short-Form Content Creation
- Conceptualize and produce short videos or reels to showcase campus life, academic programs and special events for social media and web purposes.
- Conducts file management: exports, distributes and archives.
- Post videos as assigned.
- Social Media Community Engagement
- Monitor comments, messages, tags and mentions, responding when appropriate to foster positive engagement.
- Engage with student, faculty and alumni content to build authentic connections.
- Analytics and Performance Monitoring
- Track and analyze engagement metrics, reach, impressions and audience growth.
- Prepare periodic performance reports and recommend content adjustments based on data insights.
- Set benchmarks for engagement and provide insights to inform future campaigns.
- Collaboration and Administrative Duties
- Collaborate with colleagues on projects, and assist with broader communication and marketing initiatives (e.g., email campaigns, web features) as needed.
- Participate in department and division-wide planning, brainstorming and other activities.
- Maintain compliance with college policies, accessibility standards and copyright regulations.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with a major in digital media, photography, videography, marketing, communication or related field.
Experience: 1 year of professional experience required; 2-3 years preferred. Proficiency in digital photography and video production required.
Special Skills:
- Experience using a phone camera for photography and short-form video production (filming and editing) required.
- Experience managing social media platforms in a professional or organizational context preferred.
- Energetic, proactive attitude and willingness to propose ideas and take initiative.
- Must enjoy working with people and work comfortably and easily with them in diverse settings in a creative and expressive fashion.
- Solid technical knowledge of relevant digital equipment and imaging/editing software required.
- Experience sorting, keywording and editing photographs using professional software preferred.
- Preferred experience and proficiency with Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere and After Effects.
- Familiarity with motion graphics or animation is preferred.
- Strong written communication and organizational skills required.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines and work independently and collaboratively required.
Supervisory Responsibility:
- Student assistants
Schedule:
- Full-time, 40 hours per week
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for assignments and events. Schedule determined by departmental needs with flexibility for event coverage.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to operate photography/videography equipment and carry up to 25 lbs of gear.
- Ability to move between campus locations for event coverage.
- Prolonged periods of sitting and using computers and screens.
- Some phone use and operation of copier and other standard office equipment
- Ability to travel across campus for meetings and events
Work Environment/Environmental Conditions:
- Work will primarily take place in a standard indoor office environment.
