Goshen College students consider call to service in summer
program
GOSHEN, Ind. – This summer, a record number of Goshen
College students – 33 – will participate in the
college's three inquiry programs. Of those students, 12 will
participate in the Service Inquiry Program (SIP), where they will
be doing service work at different assignments around the
world.
Participants in the 2009 Service Inquiry Program:
Julia Baker, a sophomore interdisciplinary major from Fresno,
Calif., is working with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in
Honduras. Baker, daughter of Mark and Lynn Baker, is a 2007
graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School and attends College
Community Church.
Deanna Cender, a sophomore collegiate studies major from Goshen,
is working at Yellow Creek Daycare in Goshen. Cender, daughter of
Norm and Karen Cender, is a 2007 graduate of Bethany Christian
Schools and attends Holdeman Mennonite Church.
Allyson Crosby, a junior peace, justice and conflict studies
major from Spencer, Ind., is working for Orange County Catholic
Worker in Santa Ana, Calif. Crosby, daughter of Chad and Karen
Crosby, is a 2006 graduate of New Palestine High School.
Andrea Detweiler, a freshman art major from Goshen, is working
in MCC's Serving With Appalachian People (SWAP) program in
Kentucky. Detweiler, daughter of Jay and Barbara Detweiler, is a
2008 graduate of Goshen High School and attends College Mennonite
Church.
Daniel Foxvog, a junior peace, justice and conflict studies
major from Tiskilwa, Ill., is working for MCC in Washington, D.C.
Foxvog, son of James and Margaret Foxvog, is a 2005 home school
graduate and attends Plow Creek Mennonite Church.
Daisy Gaspar, a freshman elementary education and teaching
English as a second language major from Goshen, is working for
Goshen Interfaith Hospitality Network in Goshen. Gaspar, daughter
of Martin Gaspar, is a 2008 graduate of Goshen High School.
Andrea Kraybill, a sophomore art major from Elkhart, is working
with Round Chapel in London. Kraybill, daughter of J. Nelson and
Ellen Kraybill, is a 2006 graduate of Bethany Christian Schools and
attends Prairie Street Mennonite Church.
Melody Musser, a senior peace, justice and conflict studies
major from Stephens City, Va., is working at Roberta Webb Daycare
in Harrisonburg, Va. Musser, daughter of James and Aldine Musser,
is a 2006 graduate of Sherando High School and attends Stephens
City Mennonite Church.
Breanna Nickel, a senior Bible and religion and peace, justice
and conflict studies double major from Windsor, Colo., is working
for the Discovering Opportunities for Outreach and Reflection
(DOOR) program in Denver, Colo. Nickel, daughter of Donovan and
Jewel Nickel, is a 2006 graduate of Windsor High School and attends
Greeley Mennonite Church.
Elizabeth Nussbaum, a junior American Sign Language and Spanish
double major from Goshen, is working with MCC in Guatemala.
Nussbaum, daughter of Judy Snyder and Gregg Nussbaum, is a 2005
graduate of Goshen High School and attends College Mennonite
Church.
Sarah Rich, a sophomore English major from North Manchester,
Ind., is working at Greenhill YMCA in Northern Ireland. Rich,
daughter of Sally and Andrew Rich, is a 2007 graduate of Manchester
High School and attends Eel River Community Church of the
Brethren.
Tori Yoder, a sophomore environmental science and biology double
major from Goshen, is working with Patchwork Central in Evansville,
Ind. Yoder, daughter of John and Martha Yoder, is a 2007 graduate
of Goshen High School and attends Sunnyside Mennonite Church.
Participants in SIP engage in a three-month term of direct,
meaningful service for others while testing their fit for future
long-term service. Students applied for assignments and were
matched with opportunities available with service agencies.
For the third year, participation in the inquiry programs
included the opportunity to take a one credit-hour May term course
that explored vocation, goals for the summer, prayer methods and a
blessing ceremony.
At the end of the summer, each volunteer will receive a
scholarship of up to $1,500 toward tuition costs for the next
academic year.
