Called to serve God in business

Name: Maynard Sauder, co-chair, with wife Carolyn Sauder '55, of Music Center Campaign Steering Committee

Business name: Sauder Woodworking, Archbold, Ohio; founded in 1934.

Business description: Sauder is the nation's sixth largest residential furniture manufacturer and North America's largest maker of ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture, producing nearly 25 percent of all RTA sold in the United States. With 3,000 employees, Sauder markets more than 30 furniture collections for the home, with more than 600 items - the broadest assortment in the industry.

On the spirit of entrepreneurship: "You need integrity. That's extremely important. You need to be decisive, and I believe you've got to be an optimist. You have to take some risks, but you can be careless. The most important thing I think is integrity, vision and decisiveness.

"The Christian values I learned as a youth, and that I saw demonstrated by my father and mother, have had a great impact on who I am today and how I have conducted myself. Your reputation is an invaluable asset; people need to trust you, and you can lose trust with one bad act.

"It's been real satisfying to see people succeed beyond their own expectations. Then there is tremendous economic benefit of building and leading an accomplished business because it helps the community. It helps the Church. It helps Goshen College.Ó
