GOSHEN, Ind. – During the 2006-07 school year, Goshen College Professor of Art Merrill Krabill spent his sabbatical working with mixed media pieces – particularly ceramics and photography – that explore boundaries. An exhibit of Krabill’s work will be on display at Goshen College in the Hershberger Art Gallery from Sept. 11 to Oct. 18, with a reception on Friday, Oct. 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., coinciding with Homecoming Weekend.

Krabill writes in his artist statement: “This latest body of work shows itself in images that are light (in value and weight) combined with sculptural forms that are solid and heavy. I think of the pieces as being at the boundary between two places. They often have elements that seem gate- or window-like passageways.”

One boundary Krabill deals with in his work is that between life and death. “I don’t think I’ve got it right yet and maybe I’m playing with something I won’t be able to really address in a meaningful way, but, for what it’s worth, that’s part of my thinking here,” he said.

Krabill also continues to pursue ideas in his art that he has in past work, particularly working with the ideas that “true wholeness is an ongoing breaking and healing, not the absence of hurt” and that “the holy lives in the grit of the everyday.”

Krabill is a 1979 graduate of Goshen College and received a master’s degree in fine arts from Claremont (Calif.) Graduate School in 1986. He has taught art at Goshen College since 2001, and before then was an associate professor of art at Bethel College in North Newton, Kan. He was an artist-in-residence during the summer of 2005 at the Shigaraki (Japan) Ceramic Cultural Park.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. To view more artwork by Krabill, visit his gallery Web site at: www.krabill.org.
