About Sustainability at Goshen

We have been and continue to be on a journey at Goshen College of going green. The roots of this ecological stewardship journey at Goshen College is Christian faith and the belief that God calls us to care for all of creation. In 2007 President Jim Brenneman signed the President’s Climate Initiative, which commits Goshen College to work toward climate neutrality. Also in 2007, the Rieth Village complex of buildings at Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College earned a Platinum LEED certification, the highest level possible. In 2008, the campus named its first Sustainability Coordinator. And the Ecological Stewardship Committee of students, faculty and administrators is leading the campus in collaborative efforts to encourage sustainable practices and reduce use of fossil fuels.

The Ecological Stewardship Committee has four sub-committees:

Advancement: Forms and updates a sustainability strategic plan. Establishes benchmarks. Locates resources.

Audit: Gathers data to establish carbon footprint and fulfill other evaluation criteria in the sustainability strategic plan.

Analysis: Reviews proposals for projects, helps to fine-tune plans, brings recommendations to ESC for action.

Awareness: Promotes ecological stewardship awareness on campus and broader awareness of Goshen College sustainability efforts through special events, GoGreen website, and print media.

Goshen College is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.
