Getting familiar with the Mac OS

Login and find your webserver files and folders

connecting to a network serverLogin. Click once on any empty part of the desktop. You should see the Finder menu at the top of the screen. Choose "Go | Connect to Server".

The Mac-lab Macs may automatically connect to GCFile (your 'M:' drive). If yours doesn't automatically connect, you can do the same as above but type in smb://gcfile.goshen.edu/[your userid]. You need to be connected to GCFile to print from any of the macs.

After this, you should see a little "globe" near the top right of your screen, labelled with your userid (right).

Double-click on the globe and the Mac "Finder" will display the files and folders therein. If you connected to GCFile Double-Click on the "Web Pages" folder to find your www.goshen.edu "mypages" folder.

Click once on your 'mypages' folder. Then in the finder menu, choose File | Add to sidebar. After you've done this, then when you're in Photoshop, DreamWeaver or any other program, when you use a "File | Open" menu, your 'mypages' folder will be readily available.

Starting up a program from Mac OS-X

App folderOn a Windows PC you "start" programs from the "Start" menu. Programs--also know as "apps"-- are kept in an Applications folder. You'll find this in the sidebar of any Finder window.

If you need to start up a new Finder window, click on an empty place on the screen and type Apple-N

When you're finished...

Clicking on the translucent Apple at the top left of the screen, you'll find Log Out as an option. Choose Log out, and, among other things, all your apps will be closed, and your "M: drive" globe icon will be put away for you.
