After Juan Carlos Diaz graduated from Goshen College with an art degree in 2013, his dreams of being an art teacher were at a temporary standstill. He enrolled in the Goshen Chamber of Commerce’s 2015 Leadership Academy to grow his career and expand his social networks.

Every May, nearly a dozen Goshen College students go to jail. They’re not incarcerated. They do, however, get an inside look at part of the criminal justice system – and meet new classmates who will impact their lives. It’s all part of Goshen College’s Inside-Out Prison Exchange program, which takes place over three weeks during the college’s May Term. Through Inside-Out, Goshen College students (“outside students”) and jail inmates (“inside students”) learn together and get to know one another at the Elkhart County Correctional Facility.

Doug Nisley (GC ’80) is a partner at Crowe Horwath LLP, the 8th largest CPA firm in the country, and he consistently comes to Goshen College to recruit interns and employees for the firm. Why? “[Goshen College students] are very well-rounded people,” says Nisley. “[They] can do the technical side of the job … and also talk about other things in the world that your clients care about.”
Goshen College’s ASL program is one of only a handful four-year, faith-based ASL programs in the country. When you factor in Goshen College’s focus on community involvement and international travel, you see that the Goshen College ASL program is one-of-a-kind.
