BROOKINGS, S.D. - Nelson Kemboi was named an All-American for his school record performance in the men's 3000-meter finals on Saturday at the final day of the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Kemboi finished with a time of 8:26.43 and placed sixth out of 12, making him an All-American for the performance as he earned three points to Goshen's team score. The time is also a school record, beating the mark of 8:30.40 set by Ryan Smith in 2017. Kemboi ran the race in 8:38.88 on Friday to place ninth and earn a spot in the finals. His time today was his best this season by nearly nine seconds.

"Nelson bringing home All-American accolades was certainly a great way to finish off these championships," said head coach Sean Foulkes, "but it is a testament to our student-athletes who worked so hard, and our staff that helped guide them, that we qualified so many events to nationals with such a young group."

Summer Cooper was one spot away from All-American status in the women's mile final. She ran a personal best 5:04.06 and placed ninth, but a top-eight finish was required to be All-American. Cooper improved her time by 1.02 seconds from yesterday in the semifinals. Huntington's Addy Wiley was the national champion in the event with a time of 4:48.04. Taylor and Grace also had runners in the top eight.

Next up for the Leafs after Cooper was Mady Axsom in the high jump. The first-year started at a height of five feet, two and a half inches, and cleared it on her second attempt. She missed her first two tries at five feet, four and a half inches but got over the bar on the third. Then the bar was moved up to five feet, five and three-quarters inches. Axsom had cleared this height for the first time at the Crossroads League meet, where she set a school record and placed second in the conference. She was unable to make it over in her three attempts today, ranking 12th in the field of 19.

Last to compete for Goshen was the women's distance medley relay team. After setting a school record on Thursday, the team broke the record again today with a time of 12:14.34, placing tenth of 12 and missing All-American status by two positions. Summer Cooper, Maria Maldonado, Mercy Chebet and Mia Wellington improved from their time on Thursday by 2.61 seconds.

The Maple Leafs will start the outdoor track & field season on March 25th at the Yellow Jacket Open hosted by Cedarville University. "Tonight we will rest," said Foulkes, "but come sun up, it's outdoor season and the march to outdoor nationals will be on!"
