GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Goshen College men's volleyball team took home two of the three weekly awards for the first full week of the 2021 season in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference as senior Michael Wahl was named Setter of the Week and senior Alexander Rabadzhiev was tabbed Hitter of the Week on Monday.

Wahl, a setter from Malvern, Ohio, assisted on almost 80 percent of the Maple Leafs' offense last week, picking up 59 assists on GC's 75 winners. He hit .294 with 6 kills himself while adding 5 blocks and 14 digs, including a double-double (33 assists and 10 digs) Thursday night at Trinity Christian.

For the season, Wahl ranks fourth in the NAIA with 91 assists, in addition to coming in 13th in digs and 15 blocks. He holds Goshen's program record with 1,259 career assists.

Rabadzhiev, an outside hitter from Razlog, Bulgaria, also posted a double-double Thursday, putting down 11 kills and picking up 15 digs. He hit .341 with 22 kills on the week and posted 17 digs, 3 aces and a block.

Goshen's longtime leading hitter ranks second in the NAIA with 41 winners this season, an average of 3.73 per set. He is also eighth in service aces, ninth in digs and 11th in hitting percentage. Career figures include 752 kills, 352 digs, 94 blocks and 55 aces.

The award is Rabadzhiev's fourth career WHAC weekly honor, all in the hitter category, and his first since back-to-back wins on Feb. 25 and March 4 last year. Wahl's win is his second in the setter segment after winning on March 11, 2020. Lucas Sauder has also won a Setter of the Week award.

Goshen has started the season with a 2-1 record in non-conference matches. The Maple Leafs are slated to be off this week before playing three times in three days from January 27-29, starting with a Wednesday night conference opener at Aquinas in nine days' time.
