For years, Goshen College has put on a special program in honor of Martin Luther King Day. This year's program looked a lot different.

In years past, the program honoring Martin Luther King at Goshen College involved many things and people. There was music, singing, prayer and other activities throughout the day.

This year though, the format was changed. The program was held virtually due to the pandemic.

While most watched online, a few faculty members watched it at the Goshen College Chapel.

"This year, we needed to do something different to keep people safe. Usually, what we try to create are moments of real physical togetherness with music and conversation, and packing people in, and of course we can't do this now," said Goshen College President Rebecca Stoltzfus.

She said given the times, King's message needed to be taken to heart.

"It feels very important this year to honor Martin Luther King Day and to really learn from his legacy and make connections from his time to what we're experiencing now, issues of race and violence and poverty."

For many of the students who were off from class today because of the holiday, it was a time to reflect on all of the things that Dr. Martin Luther King had accomplished during his life and what those meant to them and other students around them.

"To me, his message was for racial equality. He tried to break the barriers with the issues of race and try to get across so that we can be equal, we can be together in that there has to be no discrimination with that," said senior Sandra Cortez.

"He was a pivotal character in the civil rights movement and he helped fuel that non-violent drive to help get rid of the discrimination and hatefulness towards the people of color," said sophomore Spencer Castillo.
