Goshen College communications classes have been spread out on campus. Most of those spots are running out of space to teach the growing number of classes.

That'll change this fall when a new, $1 million "Center for Communication Studies" open its doors.

For years, if you were heading to the student radio station at Goshen College, you would definitely get your steps in going up three flights of stairs in the student union.

Space there is now at a premium.

“Right now we are in a tiny space compared to what most college radio stations would be in and we've been here for over 60 years. We've outgrown this space,” said Assistant Communications Professor Jason Samuel.

But the radio station will soon have a new home.

Work is wrapping up on the new center for communications studies at the Newcomer Center. It will house the radio station as well as the student TV studio, which right now is in the basement of the school library.

The school newspaper and public relations wing will join them, all under one roof.

“So this is going to bring them all together and have a lot of synergy, and cross communication with TV and radio, and broadcasting and newspaper writing. Public relations, those students will be in here," said Brian Yoder Schlabach.

In all, the new communications center will make available 4,000 square feet for all four disciplines, that's twice the amount of space available in all of them right now.

“So all of those students that are doing similar work, will be able to be in the same space," said Schlabach.

A move in will start soon.

“As a matter of fact, next week we will beginning to dismantle what we've built over the last 60 years, and begin transferring it to the new location," said Samuel. "And we'll be up and running by the time school starts on August 17.”
