Dr. Kauffman is renowned as a retired special education educator and writer with more than 40 years of dedication to his fields. Initially earning a Bachelor of Science in education at Goshen College in 1962, he continued his studies at Washburn University, obtaining a Master of Education degree in 1966. Subsequently, he graduated with a Doctor of Education in special education degree from the University of Kansas in 1969. Dr. Kauffman credits discovering his interest in special education to his mentor, the late Dr. Richard J. Whelan, a professor at the University of Kansas who supervised the most successful special education program in the country and held faculty positions in child development, pediatrics, psychiatry, and education.

Dr. Kauffman began his career in 1962 as a teacher in the children's division of the Menninger Clinic at Southard School in Topeka, KS. He was the teacher of a special class for emotionally disturbed children in Shawnee Heights Unified School District #450 from 1964 to 1965, and he later served the aforementioned district as a general educator from 1964 to 1967. In the 1969-1970 academic year, Dr. Kauffman further developed his experience in higher education as an assistant professor of special education at Illinois State University.

From 1970 to 2003, Dr. Kauffman served on the faculty of the University of Virginia. He held a number of appointments in special education, including assistant professor, associate professor, professor, and the Charles S. Robb chaired professorship. He additionally contributed to the University of Virginia as the chair of the Department of Special Education from 1977 to 1981 and as associate dean of research for the School of Education from 1981 to 1984. Retiring in 2003, Dr. Kauffman is now a professor emeritus at the University of Virginia.

Contributing his wealth of knowledge to numerous books, chapters and published articles, Dr. Kauffman has also served as a consulting editor for many professional journals. He is a former editor of the journal Remedial and Special Education and former co-editor of the journal Behavioral Disorders. He has also been president of the Society for Learning Disabilities and Remedial Education and the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders. Notably, Dr. Kauffman is the recipient of many awards and accolades for his teaching and research, including a 2011 University of Kansas School of Education Distinguished Alumni Award and a 2002 Outstanding Leadership Award from the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders.
