A local college student is trying to get a hate crimes law passed in Indiana.

Goshen College senior Christi Sessa took part in a meeting in Indianapolis

Right now the state doesn't have a law specifically about hate crimes.

The law does allow judges to impose harsher sentences if wanted. But not everyone agrees that does enough.

"I feel like it would make a lot of students feel safer if there was some sort of clear specific hate crime law," said Sessa.

"If you get into categories of people, as was testified this morning, there's people left out," said Micah Clark, Exec. Dir., American Family Association of Indiana.

45 states have passed specific legislation against hate crimes.

The discussion has failed to gain much traction in recent Indiana legislative sessions.
