“Discovery: A Comic Lament” is coming to Goshen College during Homecoming Weekend on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. in the Goshen College Umble Center.

Starring Ted Swartz, owner/creative director of Ted & Company Theaterworks, and 1994 Goshen College graduate Michelle Milne, this latest production of Ted & Co crosses into new emotional and historic territory. Discovery: A Comic Lament weaves through time and geography, from Europeans “discovering” the New World to the Kansas wheat fields and pipelines of the present, offering both comic and challenging glimpses into the absurdity of our oppression of Indigenous Peoples and the land we live on.

Discovery: A Comic Lament is a play about the Doctrine of Discovery, the legal framework that justifies theft of land and oppression of Indigenous Peoples.
Together, we can laugh at ourselves, we can seriously consider, we can lament, and we can start conversations about a difficult topic through the connected space that live theater offers.

This play is produced by Ted & Co, written by 2011 Goshen College alumna Alison Brookins, and directed by 2012 Goshen College graduate Phil Weaver-Stoesz. Created in partnership with the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition, sponsored by Mennonite Mission Network, Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Mennonite Central Committee, Eastern Mennonite University, and Goshen College.
