Students are returning to Goshen College for the start of a new academic year, and as parents move them in they can feel a little better about sending their children.

That is because Great Value Colleges recently ranked Goshen Collegethe 8th most affordable private college in the Midwest. The affordability ranking is determined using total tuition minus the average financial aid most students receive.

The website also considered quality of experience at the schools, which they measured using eight sets of criteria: "graduation rate, freshmen retention rate, student-to-faculty ratio, percentage of classes taught by graduate assistants, average entrance ACT score, number of campus organizations, and number of academic programs."

Many parents of Goshen students agreed with the ranking, and while the college costs $26,900 without financial aid, the average students ends up paying less than 20,000.

"When you compare it with state universities it is comparable," said Glenda Evans, who has two daughters that attend Goshen. "When you figure in all the financial help and aid that's available, we found it to be very comparable."

Great Value Colleges also ranks public schools. In our area, the University of Michigan was ranked sixteenth, Purdue was sixth, and IU was number one on the list of most affordable public schools in the Midwest.
