Lake City Bank Serving Latinos in Northern Indiana
While we were in Warsaw for the Mexican Consulate event, we also visited the corporate offices of Lake City Bank (LCB). Ralph Villalon the Director of an outreach program, called “Prospero” which means “Prosperity”, talked to the Latino SST group about the changes LCB has made as a result of the Latino demographic shift in northern Indiana to better serve the Latino population. LBC has hired more bilingual employees, they now accept the Mexican matricula (or consular card) to open bank accounts, they present different seminars in public places where Latinos congregate (e.g. Latino churches) on different topics, including: how the banking system works in the U.S., how to open a bank account, how to write a check in English, how to establish credit, how save for retirement…etc.
