Edith M. Zehr graduated from Goshen College with a degree in education in 1952 after beginning her higher education in the fall of 1946. After two years at Goshen, she earned her teaching license and began her teaching career.
Their lives have exemplified “Culture for Service” to their family, their students, the Mennonite Church, Goshen College community and to the world. This Yordy Scholarship Fund will support new generations of students to carry that work forward, hopefully with the same love and laughter.
The Yoders believe there are many Amish young people who are very capable and should have the opportunity to attend college. This scholarship is intended to encourage such students to pursue a degree in higher education.
Wayne and Roveen Townsend Yoder wish to acknowledge the life-long benefits they have enjoyed from their education at Goshen College (1961-67) by establishing this scholarship. Both have been blessed because of a deep commitment to education by their parents.
Quite literally, the very foundation of Goshen College has Jesse E. Smucker partly to thank. According to information he gave his children, with his horses and wagon, Jesse hauled away the first load of dirt from the site where the Administration Building now stands.
Both Richard and Edith very much appreciated the education and lifelong friendships that were formed during their years at Goshen College. For these reasons, Edith chose to establish this fund in 2004, hoping that it would assist Goshen College students in having the same kind of enriching experiences that she and Richard enjoyed.
Ray Yoder (BS Goshen College 1932) (3/9/09-2/28/97) taught art and painted (mostly watercolors) for nearly 65 years after graduating from Goshen College. He worked with the Southern Study as art consultant in 33 schools in 11 southern states from 1939-44; taught art, crafts, and photography in the Waynesboro, Virginia, public schools from 1944 until his mandatory retirement at 65 in 1974; and conducted his own “Painting Vacation” art study programs until 1985.
Gordon, through his travels and his work at Goshen College, shared his brother’s concern for other places and people around the world. This student aid fund is thus designed to encourage students from Indonesia and/or other countries to attend Goshen College by giving assistance to help with some of their college expenses.
She was interested in the activities at Goshen College, and followed the educational experiences of her grand nieces and nephews wherever they were studying. Having come to Goshen College herself with very little money, she wanted to be able to help current students in the same situation with her bequest.
