Audition entries will be accepted for acting and musical theater, performance in conjunction with Goshen College’s Celebrate Scholars Day. Portfolio interviews for design/technical applicants will also be conducted on this day.

The winner will receive an award certificate and a Gorsline Excellence Award worth a maximum of $3,000. To be eligible for the scholarship, the winner must attend Goshen College and declare a major in Theater. The scholarship is renewable for a total of four years.

Deadlines

Entries must be postmarked by the Dec. 1 priority deadline.

Audition

The acting audition must include two contrasting selections and be less than five minutes. It may consist of two acting monologues or one monologue and one musical number. If auditioning with a musical number, you must provide your own accompanist or recorded accompaniment. A piano will be provided. The two audition pieces should be contrasting in some way (e.g. one contemporary and one classical, one spoken monologue and one sung, one serious and one comical). These do not necessarily need to be roles you have previously played on stage.

Portfolio

The design/technical portfolio can be compiled and presented in any number of formats, but should consist of as many of the following elements as are available to the student: sketches, renderings, photos, written descriptions, play programs, videos, audiotapes or discs, etc. Basically the purpose of the portfolio is to show evidence of the student’s design or technical knowledge and skill.

Entries must be postmarked by the Dec. 1 priority deadline. Judging will be conducted by a panel consisting of members of the department and professional theater artists. Winners will be announced by March.

The competition is being held in conjunction with Goshen College’s Celebrate Scholars Day. On this day, auditions and interviews will be held with entrants. Gorsline Excellence Award auditions and interviews for theater will take place on the stage of the Goshen College Umble Center or in the adjacent rehearsal room.

We hope that all entrants can attend Celebrate Scholars Day. If distance or schedule makes this impossible, you may send an audition videotape or portfolio following the same guidelines outlined above. This must be postmarked by February 1. Your interview will be by telephone.
