Assistant or Associate Professor of Music

Goshen College invites applications for a full-time appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor of Music with expertise in Conducting and Music Education, starting July, 2023.

Specific responsibilities include: leading orchestra rehearsals and concerts, collaborating with other ensemble directors as needed, teaching music education courses and supervising student teachers, and giving administrative and visionary oversight to the Community School of the Arts teaching programs and ensembles. Other responsibilities, depending on the candidate’s expertise and experience could also include teaching in an applied area as well as other courses within the music curriculum. The successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to professional growth and the ability to forge strong ties with the Goshen/Elkhart community. In addition to teaching, the position includes advising and mentoring an increasingly culturally, racially and religiously diverse student body.

The department offers several concentrations within the music major program of study: Generalist BA in Music, Music Education, Music for Social Change, Music & Worship, and Piano Pedagogy, with a curriculum that focuses on growth in musicianship and artistry. The department has minors in General Music, Music for Social Change, Piano Pedagogy, and Musical Theater in collaboration with the Department of Theater. The Community School of the Arts provides free and low cost music programming to community members aged from birth to high school in vocal and instrumental performance. All members of the department have opportunities to develop courses within their expertise.

Goshen College is a teaching college with a 4-3-1 load, and all teaching faculty serve on institution-wide committees and assist with advising, as well as recruiting prospective students. The successful candidate must be ready to contribute to our strong tradition of excellence in research and publication as well as teaching. Candidates must be interested in working closely with students and fellow faculty members as part of a small, vibrant campus and community.

Successful candidates should be able to teach such courses as Elementary Music Education, Secondary Music Education, and Conducting. Other possible topics would be in the candidate’s area of expertise and may include such courses as: Aural Skills and Survey of Music Literature, and other new courses.

Education and Experience: 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Conducting and/or Music Education; masters required, doctoral degree (DMA or PhD) preferred
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college/university level
  • Development of thematic areas for teaching communication
  • Commitment to curriculum development
  • Interest in collaboration and service
  • Commitment to working with adult students and diverse populations
  • Commitment to the mission and core values of Goshen College

Preferred Preparation

  • DMA in Conducting or Ph.D.in Music Education or related field
  • Experience in a developing world context related to their field of study
  • Experience teaching diverse college students
  • Scholarly publications
