Admissions Office Assistant

Goshen College invites applicants for the position of Admissions Office Assistant, with the primary responsibility of providing front desk coverage of the Welcome Center and the college switchboard. The position provides the first impression for visitors both in person and over the phone. The position also provides support to the Admissions Office, which may include scanning/filing documents, general office tasks, and event support.

This is a full-time position with full benefits (vacation and sick time, health insurance, retirement, tuition discounts, etc.). Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an hourly pay rate of $13.50-$14.50 per hour.

Essential Functions:

Welcome Center (30%): Responsible for providing the desired first impression of Goshen College for guests and visitors in the Welcome Center. This could include communicating with guests in the preferred language or connecting with employees that do. Possess general information for all campus events and activities happening on any given day. Possess knowledge on every department to best connect guests across campus. Responsible for deciphering walk-in concerns and level of intervention needed and techniques to de-escalate situations. Responsible for opening  and closing procedures of the welcome center. Maintains coverage of the front desk and provides excellent hospitality.

Communication (25%):  Responsible for answering Admissions and Financial Aid toll free numbers and the campus switchboard lines. While answering phone lines, in charge of directing to the appropriate person, responding to the general questions, and communicating or finding someone to communicate in the person’s preferred language. When needed, conference calls between departments to assist with language barriers or communication confusion.

Event Support (25%):  Provides support related to the Visit and Event Program and the work of the Events Manager.

Admissions Office Support (20%):  Responsible for operational support for broader admissions processes.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Warm, positive personality with eagerness to meet and help people. Proven ability to relate and communicate with diverse groups of people.
  • Accuracy in word processing and data entry.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent telephone skills/etiquette.
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Office and Google Suites.
  • Possess high integrity and ethics in working with all student data. Handle sensitive information in a discreet and professional manner.
  • Commitment to teamwork and mutual support of others in the office.

Education and/or Experience:

Required:  High school diploma.

Preferred:

  • Two to three years experience as an administrative assistant.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two year prior experience in higher education.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly preferred.

Physical Demands:

Within the normal range of an office environment. Includes sitting for long periods of time, typing, climbing stairs, viewing a computer screen for long periods of time. Light lifting (up to 25 lbs.).
