Community Outreach Associate

This new half-time, two-year position will support the development of Adult and Graduate Programs (AGP) and the Center for Community Engagement (CCE) at Goshen College. The successful candidate will serve as a key facilitator in building relationships with community partners. This person will help to develop and promote initiatives of AGP and CCE. While AGP and CCE initiatives extend throughout Elkhart County and beyond, this person will focus especially on communities of color in the region. This position will be filled by someone with standing and experience in the City of Elkhart or with prior experience in community organizing and outreach, or both. In Elkhart, this person will relate closely to the African-American south-central neighborhood, which has been historically underserved by our educational systems—as evidenced by the racial gaps in educational attainment in Elkhart County. Under the supervision of the director of Adult and Graduate Programs, the community outreach associate will work in partnership with associate director of community engagement and adult outreach.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Record of success working in partnership with local residents and community organizations
  • Self-motivated leader who can work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral
  • Proven ability to relate to and collaborate with a wide cross-section of community members and college administrators, faculty, staff, alumni, and students.
  • Demonstrated intercultural competency
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail and a strong follow-through on tasks
  • Familiarity with software packages like GivePulse
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and a commitment to, the college mission and purpose and student success

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years of professional work experience
  • Broad knowledge of Elkhart County, specifically south-central Elkhart
  • Ability to help plan and organize events as needed
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
  • Bilingual

Essential Functions:

  • Build relationships with community partners through CCE by participating in personal and group meetings and events
  • Serve as key point of contact with African-American community, especially in south-central Elkhart
  • Help to  promote initiatives of AGP and CCE in part through gathering information on needs and areas of interest in the community
  • Propose and help to develop initiatives such as workshops that respond to community feedback
  • Assist in recruiting students and other participants  for programs, events and other offerings through personal conversations and college fairs, community meetings and other events
  • Maintain close coordinating relationship with associate director of community engagement and adult outreach
  • Build and foster key relationships across the college, especially with AGP and CCE
  • Prepare reports and meet regularly with AGP director and staff
  • Assist with other duties as assigned

Special Requirements:

  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Travel required related to community and college events, meetings and relevant college business.
  • Evening/night/weekend work may be required in representing the college at events.
