Assistant or Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Restorative Justice

Goshen College invites applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor of
Criminal Justice Restorative Justice with an interdisciplinary strength in global politics/policy, starting August 2020.

Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the area of Criminal Justice and Restorative Justice, and may include teaching survey level courses for the CORE (general education) program, including the possibility of a writing and/or research class, as well as upper-level Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies courses and interdisciplinary courses focused on justice issues.  The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate strengths in thematic areas for comparative courses that resonate with other academic programs at Goshen College – e.g., Peace, Justice Studies, Sustainability, Women’s and gender Studies, International Education, and the willingness to lead off-campus experiential Domestic and International courses.  In addition to teaching, the position includes advising and mentoring an increasingly diverse student body (41%) and supporting departmental co-curriculars.

The department offers majors in Criminal Justice and Restorative Justice and Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies, with minors in Peace and Justice Studies and Conflict Transformation Studies.  All members of the department have opportunities to develop courses within their expertise.

Goshen College is a teaching college with a 4-3-1 load, and all teaching faculty serve on institution-wide committees and assist with advising, as well as recruiting prospective students.  The successful candidate must be ready to contribute to our strong tradition of excellence in research and publication as well as teaching.  Candidates must be interested in working closely with students and fellow faculty members as part of a small, vibrant campus and community.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare course syllabi for assigned courses in collaboration with department chair and GC Core director
  • Teach assigned courses with appropriate active and engaged learning practices
  • Develop new courses for the Criminal Justice and Restorative Justice major
  • Work with Junior and Senior Criminal Justice and Restorative Justice Seminar students
  • Mentor students through advising and recruiting activities
  • Participate in department, school, and college meetings
  • Pursue appropriate professional development opportunities, including scholarly activities
  • Complete other assigned duties

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Students in assigned courses
  • Student workers in department as needed

Education and Experience:

Minimum qualifications

  • Ph.D. required (dissertation completed by August 2020)
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college/university level
  • Development of thematic areas for teaching Criminal Justice and Restorative Justice, for example environment, gender, inequality, ethnicity, etc.
  • Commitment to teaching in the CORE, including interdisciplinary courses outside of Criminal Justice and Restorative Justice
  • Interest in collaboration and service
  • Commitment to working with diverse populations
  • Commitment to the mission and core values of Goshen College

Physical Demands:

Using computers and other office equipment, mobility around campus, travel and meetings at internship sites.

Work Environment/Environmental Conditions:

Mostly inside/office conditions; Temperatures are usually moderate; Artificial lighting; Some exposure to dust and molds. Must use stairs or elevator to use toilet facilities.
