After graduating from Goshen College, Zach moved to Pittsburgh and enrolled in a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at the University of Pittsburgh, specializing in digital libraries, and began working on touch screen software for medical records in Kenya and Malawi. After graduating, he continued working as a programmer for Baobab Health. He completed his doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh’s Biomedical Informatics Program, and is currently an adjunct assistant professor of Biomedical Informatics at University of Pittsburg, and an Assistant Professor of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan.

“The research I did as a Ph.D. student in the field of biomedical informatics was built on the research and writing skills that I first learned as an undergraduate history major at Goshen College. A background in history and the international service experiences that Goshen provided for me helped to prepare me with a cultural awareness that is critical for the work I am doing in medical informatics in Malawi.”
