Dr. Wendsler Nosie, Sr. will speak at Goshen College’s annual Beechy Peace, Justice and Reconciliation Lecture on Oct. 24. The lecture is part of the school’s new lectureship series.
Nosie is a former chairman of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, which consists of nearly 17,000 tribal members on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, situated in southeastern Arizona. He was elected in 2006. Four years later, he was also elected as Tribal Council for the Peridot District, a position that he was re-elected to in 2012.
In 2013, Nosie received the Presidential Award from the National Progressive Baptist Convention, becoming the first Native American to receive the award.
Nosie is currently a professor at the American University of Sovereign Nations, where he teaches a range of master’s and doctoral programs to students from around the world. Nosie is dedicated to the protection of Native American culture, artifacts, history, religion, and tradition, and continues to advocate for indigenous, religious and human rights.
This lecture will be made possible by the Atlee and Winifred Beechy Peace, Justice and Reconciliation Lectureship Endowment, which provides an annual opportunity for the college community to focus, re-examine and promote peace, justice and reconciliation through a public lecture by a speaker knowledgeable and expert in those ideals in current local, regional, national or international affairs.
