A key component of the Goshen College Core Values Institute includes the ongoing integration of the five core values of Goshen College into the life and practice of members of the GC faculty and staff within their respective disciplines and service assignments. On an annual cyclical basis, we are inviting the entire college community to reflect on a specific core value for that particular year. We anticipate the cycle to be as follows:
- 2010-2011 What does it mean to be a Christ-Centered College?
- 2011-2012 Servant Leadership
- 2012-2013 Passionate Learning
- 2013-2014 Global Citizenship
- 2014-2015 Compassionate Peacemaking
Call for Papers
We are looking for thought-provoking, integrative papers and/or projects from a broad segment of the Goshen College faculty and staff to share in one of two annual public Core Values Institute Forums. Proposals for the 2011-2012 academic year on the core value of Servant Leadership are due by May 31, 2011 for the Fall forum and October 31, 2011 for the Spring forum. Dates for each CVI Forum are yet to be determined. Completion of the selected papers or projects will to be due no later than one week prior to the scheduled Fall or Spring forums, respectively. Up to four (4) selections will be made each year.
Proposals are welcome from all instructional and non-curricular program areas. Projects should propose significant definition of a core value and integration of that core value into a faculty or staff member’s professional and content expertise, and be understood and shared from within his or her discipline from his or her Christian faith perspective.
- What is the meaning of this core value from within my particular discipline or work responsibilities?
- How does my discipline help articulate and define this core value for myself, my profession, others?
- How does this core value as viewed through the lens of my particular work assignment at Goshen College contribute to the overall mission of Goshen College?
- How might this core value influence my consideration of what to teach or include in my class syllabus or how I go about my work or how I might better welcome new and continuing students?
The Goshen College Core Values Institute (CVI) grows out of President Brenneman’s vision that every student, faculty, staff and board member be given an opportunity to discover his or her part in the unfolding creation that is the Goshen College story. Understanding and incorporating the GC story into one’s life requires thoughtful reflection on these core values that grow out of the 500-year old Mennonite Christian faith heritage.
By sharing our varied stories with each other and in conversation with these five core values, everyone — from the study hall to the soccer field, from the board room to the break room — will become an integral member of the Goshen College family.
The Core Values Institute intends to collect these papers and projects as online resources. Long-term it would be an option to publish the pieces in a collection of essays as part of the vision of Goshen College as a thought leader in the integration of faith and practice in liberal arts education.
Proposals must include the following three characteristics:
- The proposal must involve work that is above and beyond the normal requirements of the individual’s position(s); and
- Successful achievement will be measured by how the paper or project promotes the integration of the core value into the overall learning experience of students, faculty and staff; and
- The proposal must clearly identify how those outcomes are measured.
All current full- and part-time faculty and staff members at Goshen College are eligible.
Awards will be limited to $1,000, to be paid as salary compensation only after the College President and Selection Committee have approved the selection of the proposal and after the paper or project has been presented at one of two on campus Core Values forums.
