Potters often use wood ribs or their fingers on the outside.
A finger tip of the left hand or a throwing stick is used on the inside.
Throwing sticks of various shapes allows the potter to enter smaller necked pieces and still expand the form from the inside.
To alter the shape, the potter pushes one area from the inside while the outside is pushed or supported in a different area.
Gently compressing the clay with pressure from both inside
and outside at the same spot can strengthen and distend
the form at the same time.
