Untitled  Stoneware and hemp rope

© Marvin Bartel

This piece is in on display in the collection of a biblical seminary.

I created this sculpture shortly after the tragic deaths of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King.  At the time, I was teaching ceramics at Northeast Missouri State University.  On the day I started this piece the music department was presenting a requiem in memory of Martin Luther King.

It is true that guns were merely tools in the hands of violent assassins.  However, this seemed to be an appropriate symbol for my deep felt feelings of grief and anger over these acts of inhumanity.  It is intended speak to the lynch mob mentality of hatred and violence which is too prevalent in our society.   mb
