Another video I’ve added to this playlist is from Teresa Shechter’s film
I Was a Teenage Feminist. Her autobiographical journey with feminism includes some conversation with the women who brought us Free to Be.http://www.trixiefilms.com/teenfem/shapeimage_3_link_0
I often tell my students that my parents raised me to be a feminist without realizing it. Part of why I say that is because through their associations and friendships with other Goshen College faculty members, albums like Marlo Thomas’ Free to Be…You and Me became a staple of my sister and me. We’d sing the theme song and learn how William wanted a doll. My favorite story, though was “Atalanta.”
In addition to being a book, LP, and cassette, Free to Be also became a film. Thanks to some YouTube members, you can watch bits of the songs, stories, and poems online. I’ve collected several of them here. But if this bit of nostalgia isn’t enough, you can always buy the DVD on Amazon….http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_to_Be%E2%80%A6_You_and_Mehttp://www.amazon.com/Free-Be-You-Marlo-Thomas/dp/B00005OKQT/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1201379451&sr=8-2shapeimage_4_link_0shapeimage_4_link_1
