Habitat for Humanity fundraiser, build and dedication

Goshen College stepped in to help one of its own employees build a house through Habitat for Humanity. Eddie Mayorga and his family were well on their way to receiving a house when federal funding fell through. By hosting various fundraisers and offering hands to help build, the college committed to helping make a dream possible for this 10-plus year employee in the college’s Physical Plant Department.

C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest

Five Goshen College students addressed current issues of peace and justice in the 2012 C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest. This annual contest gives students the opportunity to get involved in a peace cause as they each deliver an eight- to 10-minute extemporaneous speech. After lengthy deliberations, the judges awarded first place to Lauren Trieber and second place to Alison Reist.
The five student finalists included:
- Senior Bible and religion major Ben Baumgartner (Hesston, Kan.) presenting “Reconciling Relationships: Mennonite Encounters with Muslims”
- First-year psychology and communication double major Abby Deaton (Indianapolis, Ind.) presenting “Educating the Hearing on Deaf Education: Mainstreaming versus Residential Schooling”
- Junior sociology major Alison Reist (North Liberty, Ind.) presenting “Peace Through Sport: The Olympic Vision”
- First-year peace, justice and conflict studies and Spanish double major Aranza Torres (Waco, Texas) presenting “Our DREAM”
- Sophomore peace, justice and conflict studies major Lauren Treiber (Grand Rapids, Mich.) presenting “The Real Occupy Movement: Understanding Capitalism in a Christian Context.”

Concerto-Aria concert

Six Goshen College student winners performed with the Goshen College Symphony Orchestra, directed by Christopher Fashun, in the 52nd annual Concerto-Aria Concert.
The student winners included:
- Senior baritone Martin Brubaker (Goshen), performing “Madamina, il catalogo questo” from “Don Giovanni,” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Brubaker is a communication and music double major.
- Senior soprano Stephanie Hollenberg (Goshen), performing “Caro Nome” from “Rigoletto,” by Giuseppe Verdi. Hollenberg is a Bible and religion major and music and international studies double minor.
- Senior pianist Lisa Horst (Goshen), performing the “Egyptian,” the first movement from “Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 103,” by Camille Saint-Sa‘ns. Horst is a music major.
- Junior composer Levi Smucker (Akron, Pa.), debuting his composition, “The Book of Job.” Smucker is a music major.
- Senior violinist Elspeth Stalter (Iowa City, Iowa) and junior cellist Justin Yoder (Perkasie, Pa.), performing the first movement from “Concerto in A minor for violin and cello, Op. 102″ by Johannes Brahms. Stalter is an English and music double major. Yoder is a music and interdisciplinary double major.

Science Olympiad Regional Tournament

Science Olympiad teams from 10 area schools gathered on the Goshen College campus to compete in over 30 events, ranging from astronomy to food science to rocks, for the annual Science Olympiad Regional Tournament.
