Student Apartment Selection Process
Student Apartments are available for junior and senior students. Designed for four students, each apartment is configured with a kitchen, living area, two baths and four bedrooms. The fourth floor features a loft area for additional lounge space. Apartments offer increased independence and flexibility within the proximity of campus.
Consideration for eco-friendly aspects in the project is evident in the low-emission construction materials (e.g. paints), selection of metal roofing material, design decisions to maximize natural lighting with low-energy windows, selection of carpet tiles that decrease installation waste and replacement costs. Each apartment is fully heated and air-conditioned using efficient water source heat pumps. The heat pumps are coupled to a central 95 percent efficient boiler for heating and high efficient heat exchanger for cooling, using well water. The entire system is supervised and controlled by a central computerized building management system.
Goshen College is committed to encouraging students in intellectual, social, moral and spiritual growth. Students are invited to engage in a dynamic and life-giving community here and to mature as individuals through respectful relationships in the classroom, the local community, in the broader Christian church and among other cultures. All are expected to demonstrate sensitivity and concern for others’ convictions, perspectives and struggles.
Throughout the residence life programs we hope that students develop a sense of purpose living in community while seeking opportunities to contribute to campus life in meaningful ways.
Desired outcomes for life in the Student Apartments:
- Demonstrated responsibility and support for “GC’s commitment to community standards.”
- Friends willingly encourage and accept responsibility for each other. Respect others’ right to express their needs, values, opinions and ideas.
- Students respect the autonomy of others while working towards cooperation in resolving conflicts. Some may have to allow others time to sort out reactions before responding.
- Individuals respect the right of others to ask that students change their behaviors for the good of the group.
- The group chooses to live together and works at getting to know one another. This means allowing each other to make mistakes, to grow and to change.
- Visitation polity: 24-hour open house in public areas; 24-hour open house in all areas for group members; 12:00 noon – 12:00 midnight open house for non-members in bedrooms. No overnight guests of the opposite gender.
- Apartment Manager will work with the residents throughout the year.
- A contact person will serve as a communication link between the apartment and the apartment manager.
- Individuals in the apartments are responsible for regularly cleaning their own units. Some custodial equipment (e.g. mop bucket, vaccum, etc.) is supplied.
- Students are responsible for furnishings and applicances within the unit. Furniture designated for indoor use is prohibited for outdoor use. Take care to maintain hallway furnishings designated for residents’ use.
- Groups must be ready to have the college use units during the semester breaks to house other students or persons involved in GC programs, and are expected to cooperate with the preparation of units for use.
- Group membrs must purchase at the minimum the 45 Block meal plan. Groups are encouraged to prepare and eat meals together.
- Interested contact persons may be invited to serve on the Apartment Advisory Council. The Council provides a student voice on decisions with the Apartment Manager to help create and carry out programs that encourage connection and belonging.
