WHY GOSHEN COLLEGE?
Jair knew that as a liberal arts college just a few blocks from his home, Goshen College offers a little bit of everything.
“I wasn’t sure what to study … at first I thought I would be a computer science major, but now I’m a public relations major. I was jumping around a lot, and Goshen let me try out a few things before I made a decision.”
The size of Goshen College helped, too.
“I really like small schools. I was definitely looking for a more intimate classroom experience.”
WHAT’S HAPPENING ON CAMPUS?
Even though Jair hasn’t left his hometown, his education at Goshen College is pushing him to a deeper level of global awareness. Through the new Latino Studies semester, the domestic Study-Service Term (SST) option, Jair learned even more about himself and the world than he had ever dreamed.
“I’m Mexican, and I wanted a new perspective on a culture that I already belong to, but I wasn’t sure how that would work. The Latino studies SST really surprised me. I met Latinos from other countries that are so different from mine. It was like a crash course in a bunch of Latino cultures.”
Centered right here in the city of Goshen, the Latino studies SST connects students with local host families and cultural events. Even for Jair, every day brings something new.
“I already speak Spanish, but the leaders worked to make sure that I was still learning in my language classes. My host family was so cool — and I can still visit them whenever I want. After SST, I feel like I’m now part of a community made up of so many different communities.”
WHERE TO FROM HERE?
Back in the classroom, Jair is continuing to learn to connect with people.
“In the public relations field you get to do so much… sales, advertising, marketing, organization, communication, the list goes on. I feel like I have a huge set of skills to work with now. Goshen is opening a lot of doors for me.”
