About Senegal SST
While Goshen College has sent students to West African
countries since the early 1990s, Senegal SST is a brand
new venue to learn about this region of the world.
Senegal, located on the Atlantic Ocean, borders Mauritania
to the north and Guinea to the south, and its capital,
Dakar, is the westernmost point in Africa.
Study
French classes begin in the morning at the Centre Socio-Culturel
du Sacre-Coeur. In groups of 5-10, you begin to use your language
skills in concrete ways - from the classroom, around
the sites of Dakar, and with your host families.
In the morning and on field trips you will experience elements of
Senegalese culture, from dancing and drumming to
lutting, the national
sport, a traditional style of wrestling.
Service
During the second half of SST, you head out to different locations
in Senegal, where you will serve a local community and meet a new
host family. Common service assignments include working at a health
clinic or hospital, or assisting in a community development project.
You may find yourself working for World Vision, a large Christian
relief agency in Diourbel or supporting APROFES, a women’s
rights organization.
