Arrival and orientation
The Goshen students arrived on schedule in Yogyakarta. At left, Robin is being greeted
by Bu Mega. We all boarded a bus for the 45-minute bus
ride to the Duta Wacana guest house, our home for the next while. (As with
most images on this site, click any bordered photo for a larger image.)
Students
had studied some Indonesian before arriving. Language classes and orientation
will continue for the next 10 days.
- The first language class, the morning after arrival was learning to name, taste, and price new foods.
- Another group meeting.
The Duta Wakana guest house is in a really striking setting, at the
foot of Mt. Merapi. Many of the buildings, such as the Pendopo
or meeting hall, are Javanese
structures with open walls. Here are some other views of our surroundings
for the first week:
- Sleeping quarters,
- Dining Hall where we also have language lessons.
- A jack fruit tree.
