German and English share the same alphabet, with a few additions, for example the vowels with umlauts: ä, ö, ü. German may sound gutteral to an English ear.

Many different German dialects are spoken throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland, including Schwäbisch, Pfälzisch, and 'low' German. Some even consider English a form of Low German.
