Language (spoken German)
In Jena, you will learn to speak German, both standard
Hochdeutsch, and common regional Thüringen
colloquialisms. English has German roots and you will notice
many similarities between the two languages.
For example:
| German | English |
| und | and |
| komfortabel | comfortable |
| ist | is |
German and English share the same alphabet, with a few additions, for example the vowels with
umlauts: ä, ö, ü.
German may sound gutteral to an English ear.
Many different German dialects are spoken throughout Germany,
Austria and Switzerland, including Schwäbisch, Pfälzisch, and 'low' German.
Some even consider English a form of Low German.
