Wonji
The
Wonji refinery has been producing sugar for more than forty years. It
is located some ten kilometers south of Nazareth. The Wonji refinery
and a nearby one in Shoal put out some 80,000 tons of sugar per year,
and 2400 tons of "Desta Sweets". The students took a day to
experience the sugar and candy making, as well as the beautiful gardens
and parks of Wonji.
Ministry of Education
On
Wednesday, January 30 Ato Belete Demese, from the Ministry of Education,
spoke to our students about education in Ethiopia. Mr. Demese also encouraged
our SST program to return every year!
Afewerk Tekle
Our
SST group was very fortunate to visit the residence and studio of the
Artist Afewerk Tekle. The Hon. Maitre Artiste World Laureate is Ethiopia's
leading artist, and the first winner of the Haile Selassie Prize for
Fine Arts. Afewerk has been engaged in many challenging works, such
as the mural of St. Paul's Hospital, and a large "Last Judgment",
now in the Adigrat Cathedral in Tigri. The titles for some of his other
paintings, which give a flavor of his work, include "Backbones of African
Civilization", "African Movement", "African Atmosphere", and "African
Unity".
See a selection of Afewerk Tekle's work at africa-ata.org.
