Ethiopia -- Spring 2002 SST unit
The Spring 2002 SST unit in Ethiopia is over. But this website will remain available.
This
unit marks the first time that Goshen College has ever had an SST unit
in Ethiopia. Ethiopia welcomed this first group on Sunday January 13,
2002. The students arrived in Addis at 11:30 a.m. local time.
Addis,
the capital of Ethiopia is a mile high at 8,000 ft above sea level.
The day was sunny and the temp was about 75 degrees--a good place to
be in January.
The
Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is the only country on the continent
of Africa that has never been colonized by Europeans and one of the
oldest nations in the world (more than 2,000 years old).
Ethiopia is a country inhabited by people from many different ethnic
groups, traditions and languages. Amharic is the language of
the federal government and widely spoken, however, many people also
speak Oromigna and Tigrinya. There are a number of other Ethiopian languages
in this country which is rich in diversity and contrasts.
Director
The leader of the Ethiopia SST unit in 2002 is Dr. Zenebe Abebe who grew up in Ethiopia. He is Vice President for Multicultural Education, and an Associate Professor of Psychology at Goshen College.
