Arriving

Santo Domingo, Wednesday, 29 August, 2001 -- The group arrived 10 minutes early at the Aeropuerto de Las Americas in Santo Domingo with all their luggage. They looked a bit weary from their travels but were soon re-juvenated by a 30 minute air-conditioned bus ride into the capitol. They stayed overnight at Bettye's Guest House in the center of the historical colonial zone.

OrientationThursday morning, there were orientation lectures by representatives from UNPHU and ENTRENA. Here, Miguel talks as Lauresta, Jennifer, Andrew and Garrett listen in. Lunch was at Bettye's restaurant.

Yolanda and host motherAt 4:00, the UNPHU bus picked us up and took us to UNPHU to meet the families. There was a bit of anxiety when half the group was already picked up and the other half were wondering who was going to be the last one? Ultimately, some very happy mothers and fathers and sisters met their new family member for the next 6 weeks. Some snapshots of family members meeting their students follow...

Christopher's brother, Christopher, and LaurestaAll students made it to ENTRENA Friday morning telling each other about their families, house, neighborhood and public transportation ride to get there. All seem to have had a good first night with their families. Here Lauresta arrives at ENTRENA with Christopher and his brother. Hands-on training with public transportation followed.
