Costa Rica -- Summer 2000 SST unit
During the past 3 weeks, Casa Goshen has been busy preparing for summer SSTers' arrival on April 26.
Directors
Brent
and Launa Rohrer Beck are the SST faculty directors in San JosŽ,
Costa Rica for the 1999-2000 academic year; this summer SST unit is
their third group. Both are originally form Ohio and 1992 Goshen College
graduates. Launa, assistant professor of psychology, has also held administrative
positions in the Student Development Division as Resident Director and
as a member of the counseling staff. Brent is a school psychologist
for Joint Services which serves both Mishawaka and Penn-Harris-Madison
school districts. Launa and Brent have a 2-year-old son Evan, who is
picking up a Spanish accent quite nicely!
Launas first experience with SST was as a student (90) in the Dominican Republic. Brent has enjoyed returning to Costa Rica after his SST experience here as a student in 1991.
Maricel
Nu–ez Fallas (here, holding Evan, with her husband and daughter)
began the position of SST program assistant in March 2000. She serves
as family coordinator and helps with many program details. Maricel knows
the program well as she served as a host mother to 18 GC students.
Host Families
On
April 13, Brent & Launa hosted an afternoon tea for the mothers of summer
SSTers. In addition to explanation of program goals, there was lots
of good fun and fellowship. The mothers particularly enjoyed a game
of GC trivia!
- Host mothers Nani, Gabriela, Hilda, and Rosa laughing with each other at the tea. They'll be hosting Sam, Eliot, Sara P., and Alison, respectively.
- Sandra & Hilda reviewing the information on their new "daughters", Sarah A. and Sara P, soon to arrive from Goshen.
