Goshen College Choirs will join forces in Sauder Concert Hall to present their Spring concert “Earthtones: Songs from many cultures” this weekend. The concert will feature ensembles such as the Chorale, Chamber Choir, Women’s World Music Choir, Men’s Chorus and Combined Choirs.
“It will be a delightfully different concert,” says Debra Brubaker, director of the Chamber Choir and Women’s World Music Choir. “All of the music is international in nature with a spirit of indigenous cultures and peoples.”
Scott Williamson will direct the Chorale and Men’s Chorus. He looks forward to the concert as “a window into other cultures, being an exciting and wonderful opportunity.” Williamson highlights the Men’s Chorus selection “God Protect Us from War” by Estonian composer Veljo Tormis. “It’s a theme very important to this community, the music possessing a very concentrated power and almost hypnotic quality.”
The audience will also participate with the choirs in learning a piece which Brubaker is excited to teach. In addition, Earthtones will tap into the talents of junior music majors Jesse Landis-Eigsti, Joshua Tyson and Greg Yoder. Tyson and Yoder will each conduct the choirs on pieces of their choosing. Landis-Eigsti will premiere his composition “Terra”, a work for chorus and chamber instruments drawing focus to the earth through elements of creation, destruction and renewal.
The many voices will begin resonating in the concert hall at 7:30 p.m., Saturday evening, April 19. Tickets can be purchased at the door, $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students. GC students get in free with valid ID.
