Men's soccer continues winning streak in conference play

Thursday, October 04, 2007

Last week the Goshen College men’s soccer team captured a couple of key Mid Central Conference wins.  Last Saturday the Leafs took on the Spring Arbor Cougars, beating them in a decisive 3-1 victory.

Goshen wasted no time, as senior Tony Janzen scored an unassisted goal in the 14th minute. Sophomore Jordan Delp added another first-half goal to make the score 2-0, scoring on a beautiful strike from 35 yards out.
Sophomore Scott Wilkinson then made it 3-0 in the second minute of the second half, on a goal assisted by sophomore Rueben Stoltzfus.

Guillerme Fadlalla scored the Cougars one and only goal on a penalty kick, but the goal was simply too little, too late. The Leafs played well throughout, controlling play and out-shooting Spring Arbor 14-11 and 9-5 in the second half.
Tuesday, Goshen continued their winning streak, beating the Taylor Trojans 3-1. The Trojans struck first on a nifty set play, but the Leafs answered back in the first thalf as junior Garet Osterloo and Rueben Stoltzfus each scored goals assisted by Tony Janzen. Skillful goalkeeping by Taylor’s keeper, Benj Petroelje, kept the Trojan’s in the game, but as the game wore on, the Leafs increasingly dictated play.

Tony Janzen finally put the game away with ten minutes left in the game. Janzen drew a foul deep in Taylor’s half to set up a free kick and then scored on a beautiful cross from sophomore Luke Woodworth. With this goal, Janzen moves into sole possession of eighth place on Goshen’s all time scoring list.

The Leafs seem to be hitting their stride just in time for the crucial MCC portion of their season. With the two wins Goshen is now 6-4-2 overall and 3-1 in conference. Goshen head coach Thavisak Mounsithiraj noted the team’s recent success saying “We’re really focused right now and playing with confidence.”

The men’s next game is the Bethel Pilots in Mishawaka on Friday at 8 p.m.
