Drop it on the GC Webserver

That is, how to drop a file on the GC Webserver and tell someone else that it's there.

Also, how to edit pages already there with DreamWeaver.

W: - your connection to www.goshen.edu

On a PC, do this: "Start | GC Utilities | Map W Drive"

Now you can use the Windows Explorer to see the files and folders on your W: drive...

You should find at least a "deptpages" and "mypages" folder on your W: drive.

Look here to see the analogous thing to do on a Mac to connect directly to the webserver.

Put a file on the webserver

Files that you put on the webserver do not have to be web pages. You can put spreadsheets, word processor files, pdf's, etc directly on the webserver.

If you drag (or save) a file into your department folder on the webserver at, say...

W:\deptpages\english\oldpoets.xls

It will show up on the web at:

http://www.goshen.edu/english/oldpoets.xls

Tell somebody else about it

Try out the URL of the file you dropped on the webserver by typing it in to the location bar of your web browser. Hit your <enter> key, and see if it shows up.

If that worked, paste the URL (including the "http://..." part) into an e-mail to tell someone else about the file you've created. This is akin to sending an attachment.

Some things to keep in mind about file names and webservers:

  • Make sure the filename has no spaces and no ampersands (&) in it. Hyphens (-) and underscrore characters (_) are fine, and may take the place of spaces.
  • Life is simpler if the filename is all lower-case. Our (Linux) webserver is case-sensitive, and so if your file is called "Syllabus.DOC" and someone types it in as 'Syllabus.doc', they won't find it.

Edit a page with DreamWeaver

It's fairly straightforward to edit an existing (non-Caravel) web page with DreamWeaver. Once you've gotten your W: drive connection to the webserver, you would....

  1. Start up DreamWeaver. e.g. Start | MacroMedia | M.. DreamWeaver:

  2. As you would with many word processors, choose File | Open from DreamWeaver's menu, and go out and find (under W:\deptpages\[your department]) the page you want to edit.

  3. Make changes, and choose File | Save. As soon as you've saved, your changes are "live" on the webserver.
